House GOP Res 3 Eliminates Health Coverage to Victims of Incest, Date Rape

The new Republican leadership in the House seem to be unclear about what it means to govern for the sake of the people. There was a roar and a clamor to “fix” Washington, cut spending, promote job and economic growth and more. They get to Washington and what do they do? Continue to campaign. While folks are looking for those jobs and fixing our schools, addressing infrastructure problems, House GOP’s goal is to campaign against the President.

Soup, Wine and a Baguette with Warm Butter

The days are getting longer and spring is not too far off. Yesterday, at 5:29 pm EST, it was not completely dark. It was comforting to see a bit of “blue” in the early evening skyline. The mounds of snow on either side of my driveway are over five feet. After shoveling a path to the garage, I managed to get the recycling bin out of the garage, down the driveway and curved out an alcove in the snow mound in hopes of the bins being picked up.

Eric Cantor Wrong on Social Security. Go Figure.

It’s that kind of morning; grab a cup of coffee and take action. Democracy for America and other organizations are fighting to protect Social Security. Its one thing to review something and improve upon it. It is quite another to take our hard-earned money (remember that we pay into it) and allow some private financier to toss it at the stock market and hope for the best. Even worse, to cut Social Security when it does not add a dime to our national debt. And US Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA 7th) is proposing to do just that.

Help Take Guns out of the Wrong Hands.

Add your voice to Color of Change, MoveOn, Mayors Against Illegal Guns!

Earlier this month we witnessed a tragic shooting in Tucson, AZ, leaving 6 dead, and 20 others — including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords — injured. While rhetoric from the far-fight that feeds distrust and hatred towards our politicians (especially among the mentally ill) needs to be called out and countered, another factor jumps out. Someone like Jared Lee Loughner should never have been able to buy a gun.

Color of Change Seeks to Reduce Student Loan Debt

Here’s an important message from James Rucker, Color of Change. Read it and then take action!

Hundreds of thousands of people go into debt every year enrolling in for-profit higher education programs like DeVry and Argosy — sold on the idea that they’ll graduate with skills that will lead to opportunity and a better life. In reality, many come out with a mountain of debt they can’t pay back and no better prospects at employment.1

My Attention Span Is Not That Short

During his State of the Union address, the President once again reached out to the GOP, saying that, “we cannot do this without you.” In fact, throughout his speech, the President challenged us all to come together in oder to win the future. He understands that we need to unite in order to be our best.

President Sets the Tone. Will Congress Follow?

It was wonderful to watch the President deliver his State of the Union address before a house, even if only symbolically, united. It was equally wonderful to hear both sides of the aisle talk more sincerely about working together instead of politicking against each other.

Cooper Reprimands Bachmann For ‘Flunking’ American History

OMG! We Were Free! Who Knew! In her own words, ”the very founders that wrote those documents [The US Constitution] worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States….Men like John Quincy Adams, who would not rest until slavery was extinguished in the country.”

Rep. Bachmann at her Best. Choosing Fact Over Fiction.

Not Really! US Rep. Michele Bachmann shares her rationale for repealing the Affordable Care Act during a press conference on January 24th in her home district.

Ms. Bachmann says that the provision of allowing students to remain on their parents’ health insurance up to age 27 comes with a cost, but never says what that cost is. She She says that no new physicians will be added, in a shameful attempt to marginalize the growth of the health care industry.

Its a ruse. What’s missing? The facts.
