Egyptian Protests in Alexandria, Suez, Cairo and other Cities

CBC News

What happened yesterday with the messages all over Twitter that Hosni Mubarek was stepping down? Did “Twitter” get it wrong? That’s hard to do since Twitter is a social media tool and not a person. Did someone misunderstand the messages that were coming from those “close” to Mubarek? I don’t think so. I think the message that he was resigning was done deliberately by Mubarek in order to bring the crowd to a euphoric state and then slam them with a bucket of ice water causing them to turn violent. That way, Mubarek could “clear” Tahrir Square with force claiming he had no choice. It was also a slap in the face to the world leaders who are calling for Mubarek to listen to the voice of the people. The punchline: a speech that was out of touch, out of place and out of time. His transfer of power to someone he appointed from his beleaguered regime, empty.

Some political pundits report that a few world leaders are calling upon President Obama to not be too strong in his words of support for the people and not for Mubarek so as not to belittle or humiliate Mubarek. Truth be told, Mubarek is doing a fine job of belittling and humiliating himself. His actions make him look smaller and smaller. Moreover, if his “honor” depends upon the actions of others, he has none.

The end result, protests have spread throughout major cities across Egypt.

My prayers are with the people of Egypt, that their protest remains peaceful.
