I believe that our judicial system is a key attribute of this country; one that sets us apart from other nations. When something goes awry leaving us beyond the ability to negotiate or even arbitrate, we can at least go before a court and hopefully arrive at some kind of justice within the framework of our laws. The events unfolding in Wisconsin are unbelievable. Its unsettling (disgusting) to watch Wisconsin’s governor and his GOP supporters wantonly ignore the rules of their legislature and thumb their noses at the judicial system.
Despite a court injunction on implementing the bill that would strip state and locals workers of most of their collective bargaining rights, on Saturday, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker had the state’s Legislative Reference Bureau publish the bill online. By doing so, Walker claims the bill is now “law” and announced his plans of carrying out the “law.”
Wait a minute. What happened to the court injunction that a judge issued on March 18? No matter to Walker. Apparently he sees himself not just above the law but he is the law. In another country, Walker might do well as a dictator. Or, given the current unrest in countries with dictators, maybe not.
According to Wisconsin KBOI Radio, “Technically, the measure can’t become law until it’s signed by the secretary of state and published in the newspaper of record, the Wisconsin State Journal. Neither has happened.” [….]
I’d suggest that someone give Walker a copy of the state’s constitution but he’s passed that stage. Hopefully, Wisconsin’s citizens will successfully recall Walker and get someone into the governor’s seat that understands what it means to govern in a democratic setting.
