Time to tell Congress to dump DOMA|Speaking of petitions and the power of our united voice, it’s about time for Congress to dump DOMA. My friends at PFAW has a petition to do just that:
McDonald’s Employees Cheer and Film Assailants’ Brutal Beating of Transgender Patron | A 22-year-old transgender woman is pulled out of a McDonald’s bathroom and viciously beaten by two customers. She is punched, knocked to the ground, dragged across the floor by her hair, and kicked in the face until she appears to experience a seizure.
Boehner and the Cost of Culture Wars | House speaker John Boehner eagerly jumped head first on the culture war bandwagon about DOMA. He wants to go embroil the nation in litigation on this issue. I don’t know of any litigation — especially on this level — that is cheap.
US Immigration Judge Suspends Deportation of Gay Spouse | VOA News | For the first time, a U.S. judge has suspended the deportation of the foreign-born same-sex spouse of an American citizen. Last week’s action by an immigration judge in New York comes amid ongoing challenges to the constitutionality of a law banning the federal government from recognizing marriages between homosexuals. … Last week (3/22/11), Alcota stood before an immigration judge fearing deportation to Argentina. But the judge halted deportation proceedings to give her and Ojeda time to petition for federal recognition of their marriage.
An HIV Prevention Campaign That Harms Instead of Helps | Change.org | Petition | Normally, I’d put this under health but this belongs under civil rights. Why? Because this “HIV prevention campaign” is really a campaign against the gay community, promoting fear and not health awareness. “It’s Never Just HIV” campaign warns that if you get HIV, you’re more likely to get osteoporosis, dementia, and anal cancer. In a press release about the campaign, the Department of Health said the campaign is “an effort to combat complacency about HIV” and to encourage men who have sex with men to use protection to avoid spreading HIV. But the campaign doesn’t focus on encouraging condom use or telling people to get tested; instead, it uses graphic imagery to instill fear. It sends the message that life is hopeless for those who are HIV-positive, and that HIV-positive people can’t lead happy lives even if they take medications.” Read the article and sign the petition.
NOM launches attack ad against Pres. Obama for no longer defending DOMA | “The gay marriage group Stop 8 has called the National Organization for Marriage’s (NOM) attack ad against President Barack Obama’s decision to no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) “gibberish.” … The president recently announced he would no longer defend the Clinton-era law because he believes portions of the law that bans federal recognition of the legal marriages of gay and lesbian couples to be unconstitutional. … In a one-minute-twenty-three-second video released last week, NOM accuses the president of turning his back on marriage.” Naturally, the GOP, especially the Party’s presidential hopefuls, are at a fever pitch calling for turning back the hands of time.
AG Holder’s Letter to Boehner Re: DOMA. Fox Doesn’t Get it|“Attorney General Eric Holder sent a letter to House Speaker Boehner on Wednesday explaining in further detail why he and President Barack Obama have made the decision to stop defending the Defense Of Marriage Act in court.”
Inside the Family Research Council. Conservative Christian Values, Anti-Gay Agenda, and Gay Escort [?]|All too often in the midst of the culture wars, the guy or gal yelling fire in the middle of the theater is the one holding the ideological “match,” fabricated by him or her and based on untruths. There’s a war against Planned Parenthood that has at its core a bogus exposé video; surprise, nothing in it is true.
Senate May Vote Tonight on DADT | The Senate may vote as soon as this evening on whether to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the policy that prohibits gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. The time is now to end this discriminatory practice once and for all.
Join PFAW’s Call on Values Voter Summit Speakers to Denounce Bryan Fischer’s Extremism | If the GOP is a “mainstream” political party, then why are some of the country’s most prominent Republican leaders — including the party’s likely presidential candidates — preparing to share a stage this weekend with one of America’s most outspoken and unabashed bigots, who equates gays to terrorists and wants to deport all American Muslims?
Kill Bill … Because he is Gay? | Kill Bill was one of those goofy movies about a bride’s revenge on a “rogue” would be groom one watches by accident, i.e., you turn on the television and the television begins to watch you. In between the snores and snorts, you happen to notice that “silly movie of the week” is on. If only Richard Cohenwere a character in some silly movie that one may watch for sheer and mindless entertainment, sort of. Cohen is not a character in some movie; he’s real.
