Color of Change: Should sagging pants get you kicked off a flight? Arrested? Jailed?|That’s the question that I got in an email alert this morning from my friends at Color of Change. Personally, I don’t like sagging pants. One of my grandson’s visited the other day and his pants were sagging, showing his undershorts. I quickly mentioned how such display was not happening at Grandma’s house. He pulled his pants up and said, “Sorry, Grandma.” And that was that. What I did not do was call the police and have him arrested because of his choice of clothing style. But that is what US Airways did when one of its passengers — on his way to a funeral — came on board with sagging pants.

Fox News Eric Bolling’s racist commentary over the top.|It’s not first time he’s had a hoodlum in the hizzouse.” That’s the opening quote of what Fox News Eric Bolling had to say about the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo (also current president of the UN Security Council), visiting the White House because President Gabon’s skin is black. My friends at Color of Change is working on putting a stop to this kind of hateful and racist commentary. Read the story. Sign the petition.

DNA proves 10 Black men innocent but Illinois refuses to recognize their innocence. |Recent DNA testing has proven the innocence of 10 men from Cook County, Illinois who were forced to confess as children to crimes they didn’t commit. Some of them have been imprisoned for nearly 20 years. Despite overwhelming genetic evidence that has linked the crimes to the real killers, state officials have refused to recognize the innocence of these men.‬

When will we learn to love ourselves just as we are, including the color of our skin? Payne grew up in Tuscaloosa AL in the 1950s and 1960s and at the age of 12, his family moved to Hartford CT. In Tuscaloosa, he attended all black schools (including teachers and staff) where he was well-exposed to black history on an academic level. Despite that exposure, because of the segregated life style, Payne said he was psychically conditioned to believe that because he was black, he was inferior to white people.

Texas Group Offers Scholarships Exclusively for White Males |The country’s shifting demographics has inspired a group in Texas, The Former Marjority Association for Equality, to offer scholarships exclusively to white males. In the mission statement, they address an immediate, an obvious, obstacle, “One obstacle that we immediately anticipate is to not appear racist or racially motivated.”

More Black men now in prison system than were enslaved |More African American men are in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850, before the Civil War began,” Michelle Alexander told a standing room only house at the Pasadena Main Library this past Wednesday, the first of many jarring points she made in a riveting presentation.”

Houston police beat helpless 15-year old by William Winters|Color of Change | A shocking video released last week shows four Houston police officers mercilessly beating a 15-year old burglary suspect while at least eight other officers looked on. Some kicked him repeatedly in the head and legs, others punched his torso — all while young Chad Holley was lying face down with his hands behind his head in surrender.

Waterproof LA, last place to allow blacks to vote, jails Mayor for “forgetting his place.” by ColorofChange.Org | It’s like a scene from the 1960s — a Black mayor stepped out of line with powerful White politicians in a small Louisiana town, and it cost him his freedom.

Neshoa. The Price of Freedom | 2011 marks the 47th anniversary of the murders of three civil rights workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, in Neshoba, Mississippi by a mob of Klansmen. No one was arrested for the murders until 2005, when law enforcement officials arrested then 80-year old Edgar Ray Killen, a Baptist minister.

Fox’s Race Baiting Like a Cancer is Spreading to CNN | FOX is claiming that under President Obama, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is refusing to prosecute voting rights offenses when the victims are White and the perpetrators are Black.[1]It’s a bogus story based on the allegations of one former Republican DOJ attorney, and it sidesteps a mountain of facts.

Captive Constituents. A story of Prison-Based Gerrymandering | On June 1st, the NAACP Legal Defense Fundreleased a report,“Captive Constituents,”that clearly demonstrates that the constitutional requirement of equally proportioned voting districts to ensure the implementation of “one person, one vote” is being grossly violated; especially for communities of color.

Jim Crow has a New Taste to Chase — Brown Instead of Black | Nearly one and half years after the new administration took office, we still have in Congress an entire political party doing all it can to do absolutely nothing in an effort to discredit the President.

Arizona’s New Laws: Do they Create Value or Apartheid? | POLITICO reported the other day that  the proponents of Arizona’s new bill that bans ethnic studies and classes in public schools claim that such classes and studies “are designed only for students of a particular race and promote ethnic solidarity over community integration.”

Color Of Change Tells Fox: “Fire John Stossel” | On Wednesday, Rand Paul, the GOP’s US Senate candidate for Kentucky repeated his claim that a central piece of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was wrong, and thatbusinesses should be free to discriminate against whomever they please.1Paul and his supporters don’t seem to care that without federal intervention, Black people might still be second-class citizens in many aspects of American life: where we eat, where we work, even where we live.

You’re Under Arrest for Driving While Black or Brown or Tan or Maybe Somewhere in between? | If you are my age, you grew up during the great wild, wild western movie era.  Picture John Wayne standing in front of a local saloon, getting ready for the bad guys to ride into town.  ”Shoot first and ask questions later.” Those words might have been heard as he poised himself for the inevitable gun battle.

Once Again, No Minority Nominee to CT’s Superior Court |I am concerned that the latest round of judicial appointments to Connecticut’s Superior Court made by Governor Rell and legislative leaders do not include a single minority nominee. The 2000 census clearly shows that 18.5 percent of our state’s population are of African American and Hispanic heritage. This does not include other ethnic minority groups such as First Americans, the growing Brazilian community, Asian and Pacific Islanders, to name a few.

The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity Launches Race-Talk.org Blog | One of the more difficult conversations to have is that one about race.  Like the discussion about the “birds and the bees,” serious discussions about race are often put aside as they are “too difficult” to host, to manage, to bring about change, to simply have a dialog.

Race and Hate-Bait Outrage of the Week | Outrage Of The Week – Birther Ad, You just can’t make this stuff up. In 2007, Republican House Leader John Boehner called on Democratic Leaders to condemn “character assassinations.” But when the right-wing fringe’s ‘birther’ movement recently ran a disgusting full page ad using pictures of chimpanzees to question the origin of President Obama’s birth, Boehner’s response?Silence.

Slavery, Women’s Suffrage, Civil Rights & Politics Don’t Mix. Since When? | I watched when Senator Reid first made his comments on how health care opponents, in particular the GOP, had offered only ways to derail health care reform.  In addition, their goal, which they have repeated throughout this debate, is to ensure President Obama fails.

Murdoch, Race & Hate Bait. He Bleeds. He Leads | Color of Change, who rallied a national online movement of letter writing, emails and petitions to remove Glenn Beck off the air by reaching out to Beck’s advertisers, has now turned its attention to the head of News Corp (and owner of Fox), Rupert Murdoch.

Jane Elliott’s Brown-eyed/Blue-eyed People. A Class Divided |My personal encounter with Jane Elliott’s exercise in racism and segregation was through a friend of mine who teachers diversity training at Outward Bound. Shirley convinced me to attend a “couple” of days training through experiential learning on a place called Thompson Island, which is located right off of Boston harbor.

Unchecked Ignorance and Fear | When I was a young girl, I read a great deal about World War II, including books on Adolf Hitler, Karl Adolf Eichmann — famed for being the “architect of the Holocaust” — and other historical accounts about Nazi Germany and The Third Reich. At times, what I read tore at my sensibilities.
